After decades of discussion, a planned road project intended to ease traffic around Shelby Farms has been stopped in it's tracks.
In a vote Thursday, the Memphis metropolitan planning organization scrapped plans for "Shelby Farms Parkway." The two and a half mile proposal would have begun at Kirby Parkway and Walnut Grove to end at Whitten and Macon.
Supporters said it would have moved traffic off farm road at Shelby Farms and lessened congestion on Walnut Grove.
The vote was a disappointment for members of the Shelby Farms Park Conservancy like Angie Whitfield.
"We are disappointed in the decision that was made yesterday because we believe that the Shelby Parks Parkways would benefit visitors by improving safety for cyclists, pedestrians and cars," Whitfield said.
Originally, both the City of Memphis and federal government were reportedly going to pitch in for the new parkway. The project died because city government determined the project was no longer needed.
