MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Abbeville, Mississippi, native McEwen, set a personal-best height in the men's high jump at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
McEwen cleared 2.36 meters on Saturday, simultaneously achieving him a personal record and the first Olympic medal of his career.
Hamish Kerr of New Zealand, and McEwen both initially missed three jumps at 2.38 meters, leaving them tied for first place.
Similarly, during the 2021 competition at the 2020 Tokyo Games, high jumpers Mutaz Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi tied and agreed to both take home a golden medal.
At this year's Olympics, McEwen and Kerr chose differently. They both decided to jump off for gold and silver.
Kerr made the 2.34-meter jump while McEwen missed it. Leaving Kerr with the gold medal and McEwen with the silver medal.
