MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Household hazardous waste can be dangerous to people, animals and the environment, so Shelby County has a place for residents to safely dispose of them.

Items listed as flammable, corrosive, toxic or harmful to the environment are considered to be household hazardous waste — insecticides, pesticides, hydrofluoric acid, compressed gas tanks, automobile batteries, etc.

The Shelby County Household Hazardous Waste Facility — 6305 Haley Road in Memphis — is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for any Shelby County resident, who will need to show their car tag and zip code. Exceptions are made for military members.

The facility will only accept 100 pounds per vehicle every 30 days. Items brought should be placed in a clear tote or box. Televisions, scrap metals and latex paint will not be accepted.

For electronics, a maximum of one monitor, one keyboard and one computer per family are accepted every 30 days.

Commercial or business waste is not allowed.
