SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Leaders within the Shelby County Government held an opportunity for business owners and aspiring owners to learn how to build their organization Saturday morning, March 16.
People were able to get help with filing for licenses and how to get loans and grants.
“There was just so much information for business owners,” business owner Jacquelyn Bracey said.
Bracey is just one of several business owners who attended the "How to do Business with Shelby County" workshop.
The event was part of Shelby County Commissioner Erika Sugarmon’s effort to improve economic growth across the county.
“They talked about if you want to start a business as a sole proprietor or if you want to start your business as an LLC,” Bracey said. “It was just a multitude of information.”
The event was also catered to people hoping to start a business in Shelby County. Speakers touched on everything from deciding if you’re applying to be a 5013c Nonprofit and how to ensure your taxes are covered each year.
“Transactions that someone has to pay for — make sure that you add taxes to their invoice,” consultant Lynn Whitney said. “When you add taxes to your invoice, that is not a profit to you. Those taxes should then be transferred to that tax savings account because remember, Uncle Sam is gonna get his money.”
The county’s Office of Equal Opportunity Compliance also made sure to bring resources for minority owned businesses.
“Part of what we stand on with our minority and women business enterprise program is the premise that there are certain folks who’ve been underutilized in the past, and/or discriminated against,” Shep Wilburn said. “We’re trying to improve their utilization.”
