Walnut Grove Road litter causes call for action

A woman called ABC24 News for answers after she's seen enough trash pilling up on the side of the road.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — If you’ve ever driven through the intersection of Germantown Parkway and Walnut Grove Road going westbound, you’ve likely seen the trash that seemingly grows bigger by the day.

But, one Cordova woman said enough is enough.

“I see the trash on Walnut Grove all the time almost every day, but this was the day that I just couldn’t take it anymore,” she said.

“All of the visitors, all of the people that are coming back-and-forth to the hospital, to our beautiful Shelby Farms area here which is really an amenity to see trash on the sides of the road is just heartbreaking.”

The problem extends beyond the intersection nearly reaching the main entrance to Shelby Farms.

“I’ve called the city on numerous occasions, and I always get a confirmation number. But the situation doesn’t change," she says.

So, ABC24 called the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the City of Memphis for answers.

Since much of the debris and trash is on public easement, and not on the road, the city of Memphis is responsible for the cleanup.

In a statement, the city tells us they'll take responsibility.

As for the woman concerned about the litter, she has just a few words for those who created this mess in the first place.

“They have no self-respect. They have no respect for our city. They have no respect for our country. They have no respect none., Why. I don’t know, ” the woman says.

A city spokesperson told ABC24 that the Memphis Road Maintenance division began the cleanup Friday as a result of our investigation and will continue Monday morning.
