Out with the old, in with the new — Memphis neighborhood South City got a brand new mural on Saturday.
Leaders and community members got together for its grand opening. With the mural's bright colors and its hopeful message, organizers said they wanted to highlight the positives that the community has, instead of focusing on only the problems.
"On this wall, at one point, there was a mural, but it had faded for about 30 years," Rebecca Hutchinson said. "It was unsightly and it was basically blight. For a long time, I had looked at this mural and said 'we need to do something about this wall.'"
Hutchinson is the founder of a community development organization in the area called SCORE. She said she approached the owners of the building about a new mural to take the old one's place.
"They said 'yeah sure — let's make it happen,' and that's how we made this mural occur."
Created by Memphis artist Joseph Boyd, this vibrant mural pays homage to individuals and pivotal events that have shaped the cultural landscape of South City.
