The Southern College of Optometry is giving the gift of sight. Volunteers handed out “electronic video magnifiers” to 14 local kids who have trouble seeing Thursday.
The machines can make images look 118 times bigger. EVM technology is an amazing tool, but insurance rarely covers it.
That’s why the Southern College of Optometry teamed up with “Sight Savers America” to cut costs all the way down to zero.
“This is extremely special because this technology, many times, costs over $3,000 for one instrument, and many times families can’t afford it on their own. And this allows them to provide this opportunity to them or their child where they can explore things that they didn’t know was there before,” says Dr. Cynthia Heard, Professor of Optometry.
After the kids got their gift, the college invited them to stick around and get some training on how to get the most out of their new device.
