MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Local Tennessee lawmakers are making a push to allow alcohol and beer to be sold at the Memphis Zoo during regular hours.
State Senator Brian Kelsey of Germantown and House Democraticleader Karen Camper of Memphis are sponsoring the legislation.
Currently, beer sales at the zoo are only allowed for fundraisingand during special events with a permit.
“The Memphis Zoo is one of the top zoos in America,” said Sen.Kelsey in a news release. “Revenue from alcohol sales will allow it to upgradeeven more of its world-class exhibits. I’m happy to work with the zoo and withmy colleagues from Shelby County to help this treasure of our community.”
“The Memphis Zoo is one of the great educational and entertainmentresources in our city,” Leader Camper said in a news release. “I am glad thatwith this bill we will be able to expand opportunities for our businesses andcitizens to enjoy the zoo in new and exciting ways.”
“Memphis Zoo sees this as a potential opportunity to raiseincremental revenue and provide the option to guests that would like topurchase alcohol during their visit,” said Jim Dean President and CEO ofMemphis Zoo.
Lawmakers approved the sale of alcoholic drinks at Zoo Knoxvillelast year. Sen. Kelsey says this bill would allow for the same at the MemphisZoo.
