MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Congressman Steve Cohen announced Thursday that the University of Memphis and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will receive grants from the National Science Foundation for a project focused on racial equity in STEM education, according to a press release from the U.S. House of Representatives.

St. Jude will receive $1,510,106 for its work on the project under the direction of Katherine Ayers, manager of the Cancer Education Center and Dedric McGhee, a clinical project manager.

The University of Memphis will receive $659,341 for its part of the project under the direction of Assistant Professor of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership Olayinka Mohorn-Mintah, the release said.

“I am pleased to see St. Jude and the University of Memphis working together to address equity in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)," said Congressman Cohen in a statement. "This project supports research on projects investigating how considerations of racial equity factor into improvements in STEM education and the development of a technically proficient workforce. I congratulate St. Jude and the University, and the research grant recipients, for this prestigious recognition.”
