MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis and Tennessee lawmakers are reacting to the mixed verdict in the federal trial of three ex-Memphis Police officers charged in the death of Tyre Nichols.

Justin Smith, Demetrius Haley and Tadarrius Bean were found guilty of obstruction in the case.

Bean and Smith were found not guilty on the other three federal charges; deprivation of rights, deliberate indifference and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Haley was found guilty of lesser charges for counts one and two; bodily harm and deprivation of rights involving bodily harm.

The three former officers were on trial for violating Tyre Nichols' civil rights in the beating death on Jan. 7, 2023. Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills, Jr., pled guilty to federal charges and did not stand trial.

Memphis Mayor Paul Young

"My hope for our community is that we continue to respond in peace and that we keep Tyre's legacy at the heart of our collective reaction to this verdict."

Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy

“We commend the diligent work of the US Attorney's Office. The public deserves to know that those who enforce the law are not above the law: if they use excessive force they'll be held accountable. While the verdict may not be everything hoped for, we're fully prepared to move forward with the State's case. We will await sentencing in federal court, consult with US Attorney’s Office counsel, and take appropriate steps in state court.”

TN State Sen. London Lamar (D-Memphis)

"Today’s verdict brings a measure of justice for Tyre Nichols’ family, who have endured unimaginable pain since his tragic and senseless death. While no verdict can bring Tyre back, the conviction of these officers is a critical step in holding those responsible accountable. This verdict allows Tyre’s family to begin to heal and look to the future, knowing that justice was served. We must continue working to ensure that no family in Memphis—or anywhere else—ever has to endure such heartache again. I remain committed to fighting for reforms that will protect our communities and prevent these tragedies from happening in the future."
