Storage Units Broken Into At Storage Facility In East Memphis

Thieves targeted a popular Simply Self Storage facility in East Memphis. Memphis police say 34 units were burglarized and the suspect’s getaway vehicles were caught on camera.

One victim, Robert Wilson, lost more than $16,000 in valuables. Wilson, who owns a pressure washing company, says this is the second time thieves tried to get into his unit. The first time they were unsuccessful.

“They couldn’t cut the lock they tried on the front one, as I showed you. They had to use a crow bar or something pretty sturdy,” Wilson explained.

Memphis Police are investigating the thefts. The stolen items valued more than $50,000 at the storage facility that is located near the intersection of Getwell and Shelby Drive. Memphis Police released surveillance video that shows Wilson’s pressure washer and other items being towed away on a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

“Instead of having three people working and pressure washing, I’ve only got two. Other guy sits at home, one guy sits at home now until I get this unit replaced,” Wilson said.

Memphis Police say this facility was hit multiple times last month. The thieves were able to get inside by cutting the chain on the entry gate.

“There’s no cameras on this side that’s why they were able to open these doors to locate the property they were looking for,” Wilson stressed. He says because this is the second time he’s experienced this, he’s moving his stuff elsewhere.

“This is going to mess me up a little bit but I’m fortunate I had insurance, so I can replace this,” Wilson said.

Local 24 News reached out to Simply Self Storage. The manager who worked there during the time of these burglaries has resigned. We are waiting to hear back from the District manager.

If you recognize either of those vehicles call Memphis Police or Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
