Storm damage leaves thousands without power in parts of Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Folks in parts of Memphis will be cleaning up damage from storms that passed through the Mid-South early Saturday morning.

Trees were downed along East Parkway in midtown, and a tree was uprootedand leaning on power line at Madison and north Auburndale.

Thousands lost power during the storms. According to MLGW’soutage map, 17,000 were still without power as of 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

(MLGW NEWS RELEASE) – More than 38,000 customers inMemphis and Shelby County were impacted by outages as a result of high windsand lightning that moved through early Saturday morning. Damage is widespreadacross the county; downed trees and poles – including numerous damaged utilitypoles that need to be replaced on President’s Island alone – will complicaterestoration as debris has to be removed before repairs can begin. Predictedrain will also slow progress. Currently, approximately 23,000 are withoutpower.

MLGW will work quickly, safely, and around the clockuntil all customers are restored. There are 30 tree trimming crews working toclear areas; 18 troubleshooters are assessing damage and making repairs. MLGWhas requested outside assistance to help with repairs. Since this storm hit theentire TriState area, neighboring utilities are also asking for help.

Customers are urged to make MLGW aware of their outage bycalling 544-6500. As crews work to make the biggest impact by restoring majorcircuits, smaller, more localized outages may go undetected. Reporting outagesensures the utility can make repairs as soon as possible.

Once an outage has been reported, customers can receiveupdates by calling the outage hotline (544-6500), contacting the Customer CareCenter (528-6549) and by using the MLGW app. The outage map can be viewedonline and with the MLGW app. MLGW will also provide updates via Facebook(@MLGW1) and Twitter (@mlgw). The Memphis Zoo was on a delayed opening Saturday due to apower outage there. Zoo officials said it would be at least a one-hour delay,and they hoped to open by 10:00 a.m.
