A shootout between Horn Lake, Mississippi, police and a suspected serial robber left the accused crook dead. Officers were not hurt.
It happened Monday morning before 5:00 a.m. at the Regions Bank on Goodman Road near Highway 51.
According to District Attorney John Champion, there were a series of armed robberies at ATM’s over the weekend here in Horn Lake. On a hunch, undercover officers decided to stake out the bank and lie in wait.
“It’s becoming a dangerous world,” said Champion.
A plain clothes officer approached the ATM at Regions Bank at the corner of Goodman Road and Highway 51. Champion says an armed man walked up to the officer, and the officer drew his gun and yelled police. The suspect jumped into his car and headed east on Goodman, and a chase began.
The suspect lost control, which you can see in the surveillance video given to us by Gateway Tire Center. Investigators say the suspect crashed into police cars and began shooting at officers. Officers fired back, killing the suspect.
This was the 4th ATM robbery in this area this weekend. Champion believes this suspect is responsible for all of them.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. Agents are looking into other ATM robberies in the Mid-South to see if this suspect is connected to those.
Champion commends Horn Lake officers for putting their lives on the line.
“There’s no doubt about it. You got a guy walking to you with a gun pointed at you, his bravery and the bravery of the other officers that were involved in the pursuit is just indescribable,” said Champion.
Champion says the suspect’s car has Georgia plates and they’re working to identify him.
