Supporters of HB2043 — the "End the Grocery Tax Bill" — have one less hurdle to jump before they say financial burdens will be lessened for working families in Tennessee.
On Monday, the bill advanced past the Tennessee House Government Operations Committee and is reportedly moving to the House Finance subcommittee.
The author of the bill, representative Aftyn Behn, has said that Tennessee receives 60 percent of its revenue from various sales taxes. She states the goal of the bill is to shift the tax burden from working families to large corporations.
Supporters of the bill say it was made to make up for lost funding to what they describe as "corporate loopholes."
On Tuesday, senator Charlane Oliver is set to present the bill in the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Revenue Subcommittee.
