MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating after they said Tipton County deputies shot a man during a standoff.

According to the TBI, it all began about 2:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, when law enforcement officers tried to pull over a driver on Highway 51 in Tipton County. Investigators said the driver refused to stop, and officers chased him to a home on Narrow Lane, south of Covington. They said the man barricaded himself inside the home.

The TBI said the Tipton County Sheriff’s department SWAT unit responded to the standoff. Investigators said about 9:50 a.m., they entered the home, where the deputies said he made a “sudden movement,” and the deputies fired, hitting him.

The man was taken to Regional One Hospital in Memphis in critical condition.

The TBI said no one else was in the home at the time, and no officers were injured.

The TBI said their agents’ findings will be shared with the District Attorney in Tipton County who will determine if charges should be filed.
