Two people died over the weekend in a house fire that took place on Saturday, according to West Memphis Fire officials.
The West Memphis Fire Department (WMFD) said that they responded to 903 Briarcliff Road toward 5 a.m. after reports of a person potentially being trapped. Crews arrived within six minutes to find a single-family home on fire with the rear of the structure being the origin of the fire.
WMFD said an immediate and aggressive effort was made to search this house for victims and to put out the fire. This effort resulted in the removal of a man who was in cardiac arrest, according to WMFD.
WMFD paramedics resuscitated this man and then transported him to Regional One, according to WMFD. He later died, according to WMFD.
WMFD said that a second victim was found and removed from the house. This woman was also found in cardiac arrest. The extent of her injuries prevented WMFD paramedics from initiating resuscitative measures, according to WMFD. She was released to the care of the Crittenden County Coroner, they said.
Under investigation by the WMFD Fire Marshall's Division no other injuries resulted from this fire, according to WMFD. The fire does remain under investigation, they said.
The personnel of the West Memphis Fire Department extended their heartfelt condolences to the family of the victims involved.
