U of M issues alert following road rage incident near campus

There were no reported injuries, and one person is in custody.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Early this morning, the University of Memphis (U of M) issued an alert to students after shots were fired near campus.

U of M Police Services sent out an alert to students around 4:30 a.m. regarding a police investigation at Lot 21 on Patterson.

According to the alert, shots were fired into the air following an accident, and the suspect fled the area on foot toward campus. Students were informed that the suspect was armed with a handgun. 

U of M advised students on campus to follow lockdown procedures. They were instructed to wait for an "All-Clear" from university officials or local authorities.

U of M contacted students just before 5:50 a.m. to report that the "All-Clear" had been issued for the shots-fired incident. According to police services, the suspect was last seen in the Highland and Walnut Grove area.

U of M shared the following statement with ABC24: 

A suspected road rage incident occurred near the University of Memphis where shots were fired. There were no reported injuries, and one person is in custody. A second person fled the scene on foot. Out of an abundance of caution the campus had been asked to shelter in place.
