MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A new stadium for the University of Memphis will be built to honor the memory and legacy of Eliza Fletcher, officials announced Tuesday, Aug. 20, during a press conference on campus.
The Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium will serve as the new home for the women's and men’s soccer and track and field teams. Officials said the space will reflect the passion and dedication of Fletcher, who is described as a beloved teacher, avid runner and inspiring figure in the Memphis community.
Close friends and family of Fletcher organized the Liza’s Light University of Memphis Soccer and Track Stadium Fund to support the project. The first phase of the project aims to secure $7 million for top-tier features, which include a grandstand, press box and locker rooms.
Phases Two and Three will involve completing the men's soccer locker room and the track and field team area, allowing more than 100 student-athletes to access to premiere facilities.
In relation to the new stadium, the U of M women’s soccer program also announced the Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium campaign, which is supported by the fund.
“The Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium is a symbol of the dedication, resilience and community that Liza embodied every day. This new facility will give our athletes a place they can truly be proud of, reflecting the hard work and excellence they bring to the game,” head women’s soccer coach Brooks Monaghan said in a press release. “It is long overdue, and it’s exactly what we need to keep Memphis soccer on the map and continue building our legacy.”
Eliza Fletcher’s murder
Fletcher, a Memphis mother and teacher, was running near the University of Memphis campus when Memphis Police said she was forced into a vehicle after a struggle about 4 a.m. Sept 2, 2022. Investigators said her body was found Sept. 5 behind a vacant home after a massive search lasting more than three days.
U.S. Marshals arrested Cleotha Abston a day after the abduction after police said they detected his DNA on a pair of sandals found near where Fletcher was last seen, according to an arrest affidavit. He was charged with kidnapping and killing Fletcher, and a trial is now set for February 2025, according to court records.
