Vandals break all of the windows on Memphis mother's home

Mother of four, Rhonda Patterson, said it has been weeks since she and her children were able to live in the rental property.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —

A Memphis mother of four said her family hasn’t been able to live in their home since January 2024, because all of her windows were broken by a vandal.

Rhonda Patterson rents a home just south of Cooper-Young that is managed by Renshaw Company, REALTORS.

Patterson said a window had been broken before. But now, all eight are broken and Renshaw had not made an effort to fix them until she contacted ABC24.

"A whole body can fit through these windows, and I know if a whole body can fit through here, imagine how many rodents probably come in and out the house,” said Patterson.

The mother of four said with no windows, the home is unsafe and unbearably cold some days.

"Even before the windows were busted out, the house was still cold because it's not insulated good,” said Patterson.

Now, she has been living with friends and family, which makes getting her children to and from school a hassle.

"It was easier here because they were closer to their schools. my neighbor was helping me,” said Patterson.

Patterson wants to move out but is having a hard time finding another Section 8 rental property with enough space for her children.

"We need a four-bedroom before my voucher expires. If somebody could just help us so we can get into another place. That would be awesome. A miracle."

Patterson said the vandal got away with a TV and multiple space heaters.

Renshaw Company sent ABC24 the following statement:

“Our maintenance team did conduct window repairs at the property in December. There was a second similar incident at the same property, which prompted additional correspondence between our staff and the tenant. We acknowledge there was some confusion regarding the multiple incidents. We have since been in communication with the tenant and are scheduled to address the tenant's concerns and make another round of repairs this week.”
