MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Nov. 15, a student was arrested at Whitehaven High School for having a gun inside his car on school property.
Around 10:15 a.m., officers responded to the school, where a school security guard told police about a picture a student posted on social media where he was holding an assault rifle. The caption of the post read, "by myself."
The school security guard detained the student and asked him if he had a gun in his car, to which the student denied. However, when the guard searched the car, he found a Glock in the rear console.
Officers said that when they checked the gun in the MPD database, it was shown to be stolen in a robbery back in September.
The student told the guard that the assault rifle he was holding in the picture was in a tote bag at his home, police said. The student's mom consented to police searching the home, but officers could not find the rifle.
MPD officials said the student went with police and showed them the tote bag where the rifle was. The boy said he didn't know who took or moved the gun.
The student was taken to juvenile court, detectives said.
There have been other recent safety dilemmas facing Memphis-Shelby County Schools. On Oct. 31, a boy was detained for having a gun at a Whitehaven High School football game. In September, Memphis-area law enforcement were investigating threats against several schools across the Mid-South.
