Two women dead after house fire near Memphis airport

The Memphis Fire Department said two women were taken to the hospital after being rescued from a house fire Monday morning. MPD said they did not survive.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Fire Department said two women are dead after being rescued from a house fire not far from the airport Monday morning.

Memphis Police and MFD responded to the fire Oct. 30. 2023, in the 4900 block of Hancock, south of Shelby Dr. near Airways Blvd.

The MFD Public Information Officer at the scene told ABC24 the two women, ages 85 and 66, were rescued from the burning home and taken to the hospital in critical condition. However, they did not survive their injuries. 

Investigators said the fire started at two different ends of the house, and was sparked accidentally due to an electrical issue.
