Memphis is one of the top cities millennials are moving to this year according to a new study by Realtor.com.
The Bluff City comes in at #3 right behind Pittsburgh and Atlanta.
Some of the reasons include an affordable housing market and low cost of living. Local 24 hit the streets and asked people what they love about the Bluff City and what they think can be improved.
“It’s a city with a lot of charm,” says Kevin Coll, who lives in East Memphis. “I’ve always said it’s a city that has tons of potential and is finally seeing it.”
“There are a lot of small businesses here that are great places to learn how to do whatever it is you want to do,” says Nina Dowell, who works at Crazy Beautiful Clothing.
Another reason? Affordability. With the median home price at $164,000, many millennials can find a gem in the housing market. Realtors say the fact that millennials are moving to the Memphis can be good news for all homeowners.
“That means that we have more people coming in to Memphis and buying so the prices of homes could actually go up a little bit,” says Ruth Morris, a realtor with the Hobson Company.
Still, some say there are things Memphis can improve upon.
“It’s time for millennials to get in there and make decisions that can move our city forward starting with great public transportation and better school systems,” says Tracy Buckley, who lives in the University District.
Still, most people Local 24 spoke with have no regrets about moving to Memphis.
“I moved here almost three years ago and it was kind of a great city to move to,” says Kati Gordon, who lives in East Memphis. “There are just so many friendly people here and it was really easy to get involved.”
