New information tonight in the case of a male tiger from the Memphis Zoo who killed a female tiger from the Sacramento Zoo.

Sacramento Zoo leaders said it happened while trying to get the two to mate.

They say 12-year old Mohan became aggressive with the female, named Baha, while they were being introduced.

Zookeepers used hoses and noise makers to separate the animals, but veterinarians were unable to save Baha.

“This is a devastating loss for our zoo,” zoo executive director Kyle Burks. “We’re going to take this opportunity to examine our protocols and our processes.”

Mohan arrived at the Sacramento Zoo in December and staff had been monitoring both cats in advance of introducing the two.

The Memphis Zoo released a statement saying, “Mohan was a part of the Memphis Zoo family from 2006 to 2015. We were saddened to hear of the tragic loss at the Sacramento Zoo. We extend our condolences to our colleagues.”

Baha and Mohan are Sumatran tigers.

The species is endangered.

He will not be euthanized because of the incident.
