NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Army National Guard will begin their first leg of a year-long deployment to the Middle East on Saturday, September 28.

More than 700 soldiers from the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment’s 2nd Squadron, will travel to Fort Bliss, Texas, for a few weeks of additional training before flying to Kuwait.

“Our servicemembers have spent the last year conducting rigorous training and preparing to deploy in support of Operation Spartan Shield,” said Squadron Commander, Lt. Col. The goal of Operation Spartan Shield is to build partnerships in the Middle East to promote self-reliance in the region and increase security, according to the Tennessee National Guard. As a part of U.S. Central Command, soldiers will assist maintaining a military presence in the region and help strengthen defense relationships.

Prior to leaving Tennessee, units in Cookeville, Crossville, Gordonsville, and Morrison will hold departure ceremonies for soldiers where families and friends can honor them for their service.
