Condoms are known to help protect you and your sexual partners against sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies as long as they are used properly.
Washing and/or reusing condoms does not fall under that category.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently tweeted a reminder to the general public.
“We say it because people do it: Don’t wash or reuse #condoms! Use a fresh one for each #sex act,” the CDC tweeted.
“Incorrect use, such as reusing a condom or using more than one at a time, diminishes the protective effect of condoms by leading to condom breakage, slippage, or leakage,” Dr. Elizabeth Torrone, an epidemiologist at the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention, told BuzzFeed News. “Soap and water won’t kill all of the tiny microorganisms on or inside the condom, and it can only make the latex more prone to tear.”
Whatever the reason for reusing them may be, the CDC just wants to make sure you’re using them correctly so you’re not putting yourself or your partner at risk.
Condoms can be purchased at any drugstore or supermarket, online, and there are no age restrictions to purchase them.
You can also find them for free or at a low cost at local or state health departments, Planned Parenthood, doctor’s offices, college health centers, and community clinics.
