SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (localmemphis.com) – Here’s something we don’t say very often: Democrats in heavily Republican DeSoto County are celebrating.
Thursday night Democrats honored Hester Jackson-McCray, the first African American woman to win a state office in DeSoto County.
She beat Republican incumbent Ashley Henley for house district 40 by only 14 votes.
They faced-off before, but Henley won by a wide margin. Henley still is not convinced she lost and is contesting the results, even though the election results have been certified.
