Shelby County Election Commission faces phone line issues

A viewer told ABC24 the issue could affect absentee ballot submissions.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Election Commission has been experiencing problems with their absentee ballot phone line, and it could be affecting how voters submit their ballots ahead of the August 1 general election.

A viewer called ABC24 explaining the issue, and the commission confirmed it could be due to an AT&T issue. It's unknown if the problem is still persisting and whether it has or will affect absentee voting.

"Over the past week, a handful of potential voters have mentioned hiccups with our main line, so out of an abundance of caution, we've contacted our phone provider to review all of our lines to ensure no challenges exist," said Linda Phillips, Administrator of Elections for Shelby County.

"In addition, voters can call our absentee voting line directly at 901-222-6800 any time."
