MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The University of Memphis is seeking to help citizens make their voices heard this election cycle with a voter registration event on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

U of M is hosting the event alongside the Shelby County Election Commission for National Voter Registration Day.  Deputy registrars will be made available on campus as well as several demo voting machines — never used in elections — with pretend questions to allow civically informed participants to try.

The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. People can visit the following campus locations:

  • Maxine A. Smith University Center Atrium
  • Exterior of McWherter Library
  • Scheidt Family Performing Arts Center
  • South Campus – Billy J. Murphy Athletic Complex

"Over 16 million young Americans have turned 18 since 2020, making 2024 the very first opportunity for millions of Gen Z voters to get #VoteReady," a statement from the university said. "The 2024 Presidential Election will be Nov. 5, marking the first time many first-year students can vote. This event, seven weeks out from Election Day, will give students the opportunity to learn more about the voting process, register to vote and be ready for the ballot box."
