MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Lafayette County, Mississippi, couple is facing charges after deputies found several dogs, two of which died, left outside during January’s winter blast with “inadequate shelter, food and water.”

The Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department said Joey and Ashley Wells are charged with aggravated cruelty of a dog or cat. Bond was set at $20,000 each.

Deputies said they were contacted to perform a welfare check for several dogs at a home on CR-173 on Jan. 23, 2024, during the winter weather which hit the Mid-South.

They found eight dogs which they said had been left outside in sub-freezing temperatures for about a week, one of them dead and a second which died while deputies were there.

Investigators said Joey and Ashley Wells owned the animals, and both were arrested and charged.
