Peabody Hotel to host rooftop solar eclipse watch party on April 8th

About 98% of the sun will be covered during the solar eclipse on April 8th in Memphis.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Peabody Hotel in Downtown Memphis is hosting a rooftop solar eclipse watch party on April 8th.

A solar eclipse occurs at the exact moment when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking the sun's light for several minutes. The short time when the moon completely blocks the sun is known as the period of totality.

In Memphis, the sun will be about 98% covered, which will be enough to dim skies and provide an incredible view. It's more than the 96% eclipse that Memphis experienced back in 2017.

The Peabody will host a viewing party for the eclipse from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, April 8th. The maximum eclipse will happen in Memphis just before 2 p.m. that afternoon.

Tickets are $20 and will be sold at the door, and admission is free for hotel guests who present their room key. The party will feature concessions, snacks, and drinks for an extra charge.

Commemorative Peabody Hotel solar eclipse glasses will also be provided.
