Why is absentee voting still an issue when there's a pandemic going on?

Tennessee and Mississippi are two of the seven states requiring voters to provide a valid excuse.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. —

Absentee voting.

It’s going to be an issue in the November election, especially in Tennessee where the state Supreme Court has ruled fear of Coronavirus is not a valid excuse to mail in your ballot.

That whole idea of need an excuse seems ridiculous to me.

And apparently most states agree.

34 states already had laws in place where you don’t need an excuse to vote by mail. After COVID-19 hit, nine other states including Arkansas joined in.

However, Tennessee and Mississippi are among seven states still requiring voters to provide an excuse to get a mail-in ballot.

If you like doing your laundry on Tuesdays and would rather vote by mail on election day, that should be your right.

Who’s an election commission to decide if your excuse is valid or not?

43 states understand that. Hopefully someday soon, so will Tennessee and Mississippi.
