Opinion | MSCS should stop dragging its feet with hiring its next superintendent | Richard Ransom

Richard Ransom shares what he thinks about the new developments in the search for the next MSCS superintendent.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — If I was grading the Memphis-Shelby County School Board, how can you consider anything other than an "F'?

First of all, it's outrageous to me that it's taken until mid-November to even come up with a timeline for hiring a new superintendent.

It's worth noting that it'll be mid-December before they'll start getting input from the public, that we won't have the profile for an ideal candidate until February, that it'll take until the end of April to conduct a search, that it'll take until May to find the top three candidates and another month to interview them and that it'll be July before we fill the position.

Our 100,000+ students, the 14,000 MSCS employees and all our parents deserve a purposeful, well-thought-out decision way before then.

There's no excuse for taking more than an entire school year to find a new leader, not to mention all the other vacant positions at the top where someone's mysteriously left or put on leave while being investigated.

How many qualified candidates are going to find other jobs while this district drags its feet? I'd love to hear what you think. Join the conversation by email, Facebook or Twitter.
