MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In Thursday's Ransom Note, we have a superstar!
I was a new reporter in Memphis when the city first launched its effort to bring a major league sports franchise to the Bluff City. Despite the naysayers, it happened back in 2001.
Since then, this small market team that no one gave much of a chance has had some good runs, but fans still complained we didn't have a superstar. How "You don't win championships without one."
Well, now we do.
Not only is Ja Morant an amazing player, but he's also likeable, has his heart in the right place as his grandma no doubt knows, and seems to "get" Memphis. He likes it enough to move his family here.
I'm not a big gambler, but when my son suggested in November putting a little money down on Ja to win NBA regular season MVP, it seemed like a reasonable idea to me.
Now, at least on the app I used, you can't even place the bet!
Memphis, we have a superstar. His name is Ja Morant.
