One of these nine designs could be the new Mississippi state flag

Voters will have the final say in November

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — In Friday's Ransom Note: we're getting closer to closing the chapter on Mississippi's decades long flag flap.

The commission that's going to choose a new state flag is making lots of progress. There were thousands of submissions. They were narrowed down to 146, and today they were narrowed to just nine.

Designs include magnolia blossoms and trees, wavy lines representing the Mississippi River, 20 stars for when Mississippi joined the union, and diamond shapes inspired by the Choctaw Native American tribe. They all incorporate the words "in God we trust," as mandated by the Mississippi legislature. Next week the nine-member commission will eliminate four of the designs, and that's when the public can weigh-in. The commission will make a final selection by September 2nd, and then voters will decide yes or no in November.

It's nice that the conversation is finally moving forward, and it will be interesting to see the new image Mississippians choose to represent their state.
