MEMPHIS, Tennessee — In Thursday’s Ransom Note: amazing Amazon.
Don't look now, but the online retailer is about to become our area's 11th largest employer. Today the company announced it will add two more huge facilities to its operations here and hire hundreds of workers. A delivery station will be built right behind its already giant facility in Frayser/Raleigh as well as a fulfillment center in Byhalia, Mississippi. Every employee will be guaranteed a living wage of $15 an hour or more and full health benefits.
When the projects are finished, Amazon will actually become the area's 6th largest private employer, if you take governments and school districts out of the mix. FedEx, of course, is first with 30,000, followed by Methodist-Le Bonheur Healthcare, Baptist Healthcare, Kroger, and Walmart. Amazon's 5,000 employees will put it ahead of St. Jude, MLGW, Nike, and International Paper.
The Greater Memphis Chamber said today's announcement proves Memphis still moves the world. It's hard to disagree. Join the conversation by email (rransom@localmemphis.com), Facebook, and Twitter.
