Opinion | Stop me if you’ve heard this before: please get the COVID-19 vaccine | Richard Ransom

As COVID cases, hospitalizations, and deaths increase in Shelby County, the importance of getting vaccinated increases.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In Thursday’s Ransom Note: here we go again.

  • 400 new cases of COVID today in Shelby County, the worst since January
  • 23 people dead from COVID this week
  • 279 hospital beds filled with COVID patients
  • 81 of them in ICU units, half of them on ventilators

Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson declared a state of emergency. He is calling state lawmakers back to a special session to rescind the ban on mask mandates for schools. A friend and competitor Valerie Calhoun posted that she's isolating at home right with COVID-19. Doctors told her she would be a lot more sick if she wasn't fully vaccinated.

Folks, it's very serious, and cases are surging faster than before because this Delta variant is so much more contagious. A CDC memo the Washington Post obtained today warns the infections can spread as easily as chicken pox. All this is as kids are heading back to school less protected than last year, festivals are resuming, and employers are bringing people back to the office.

There is a solution, and it's free. It's time to stop ignoring the science and the facts. If you haven't yet, please get the shot.
