NASHVILLE, Tennessee — In Tuesday’s Ransom Note: breaking from the pack.
Not many politicians of either party do that these days, but two republicans in the Tennessee state legislature deserve a shout out for doing just that in the proposed open carry bill which passed the state house Monday.
Representative John Gillespie, whose district runs along Sam Cooper Boulevard and I-40 starting in east Memphis and out to Wolfchase and almost to Arlington, and Representative Mark White, who has much of east Memphis and Germantown, voted against the measure.
Granted the vote wasn't even close. It passed 69-25 and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee all but said he'll sign it. But both men listened to Memphis’ Mayor, police director, and others who worry the law will make gun violence worse, not to mention training is no longer required to carry a firearm. Make no mistake, both men are gun rights supporters, but good for them for recognizing some bridges go too far.
