MEMPHIS, Tennessee — In tonight’s Ransom Note: supply chain frustrations.
If you’ve flown out of Memphis International recently, then you’ve seen the gleaming 245-million-dollar new concourse under construction and wondered wasn’t that supposed to be open by now?
You’re right. It was.
The goal was by the fall, then we were told with fingers crossed maybe by the end of the year.
But thanks to the supply chain, staffing and COVID issues, today we learned it’ll be delayed until next year.
When it does open though, it sure will be nice. We got a first look inside today of the new Concourse B.
Gone will be the 8-foot-tall ceilings, ugly grey brick walls and aging bathrooms. Instead, lots of natural light, wider gates, moving walkways, new restaurants and even a children’s play area.
There will be cell phone stations everywhere and lots of public art special to Memphis. It will be (to use an airline term) first class.
If you’ve seen other airports, you know Memphis was long overdue for a major upgrade.
Who didn’t want the new concourse to open by the holiday season so we could avoid one last round of snide comments from visiting family and friends about our outdated airport?
But thanks to Memphis International for showing us that those days are numbered.
