MEMPHIS, Tenn. — 2020 has been a history making year, and not all of it has been good.
For starters, we endured a grueling impeachment inquiry in the U.S. House that ended with articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. It was just the third time in history that a President has been impeached. But the Senate, in quick fashion, acquitted Trump of charges that he abused his power and obstructed Congress.
Then came the coronavirus pandemic, the first of its kind in more than 100 years. And life as we knew it changed completely.
But Tuesday, history of another kind was made when presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden selected Senator Kamala Harris, an African American woman, as his running mate. The pick was not a surprise, certainly not by me. But it was nevertheless groundbreaking. Anyone who has a daughter, as I do, has to view this moment with pride, no matter your political beliefs. But this is all about politics and power. And the nastiness has only just begun.
If you’re a Trump supporter, you will probably view Harris as just another liberal who will only help Biden drag our country down. If you’re a Biden supporter, you see Harris as icing on the cake to finally remove an uncaring and incompetent President from office.
With the tickets now set, the campaigns begin in earnest. So get ready for more history to be made. And that’s my point of view.
