MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Now that Senate Major Leader Mitch McConnell has finally come around and acknowledged that Joe Biden is in fact the President-Elect, the question remains, when will other Republicans follow suit? Specifically what about top Tennessee Republicans – Governor Bill Lee, Senator Marsha Blackburn, Senator-elect Bill Hagerty, and 8th District Congressman David Kustoff?
Neither of them has said a word recognizing Biden’s clear and convincing victory. Kustoff, in fact, signed his name to a legal brief in a senseless attempt to get the Supreme Court to nullify the results.
Of course, many of you might say, who cares? What difference does it make if Republicans remain silent? Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn in January 20th – regardless of GOP recognition.
But the fact is, it does matter – not for Republicans or Democrats, but for the country. Loyal supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump dominate the Tennessee electorate. These same people also voted for Lee, Blackburn, Hagerty, and Kustoff. And it’s vitally important that these politicians set an example by supporting a smooth transition of power.
Grassroots opposition to an incoming President is nothing new. Lots of people objected to every recent President. But elected officials have not acted this way since Abraham Lincoln’s election led to a Civil War.
Call it hyperbole if you want, but we are at a critical moment in America, and we need leaders - not cowards. And that’s my point of view.
