Opinion | Texas’ election lawsuit is not just shameful and racist - it’s un-American | Otis Sanford

Local 24 News political analyst and commentator Otis Sanford shares his point of view on the Mid-South Attorney Generals backing Texas’ election lawsuit.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Just when you thought the political madness could not get any worse – it has. And Tennessee’s attorney general is part of the lunacy.

A.G. Herbert Slatery has thrust Tennessee into the ridiculous attempt to overturn the presidential results in four states that Democrat Joe Biden won – en route to a convincing victory over Donald Trump. Our state is joining 16 others that Trump carried in supporting a lawsuit by Texas to nullify votes in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

It’s difficult to believe – but it’s true. Government leaders in Tennessee are trying to undermine democracy simply because they don’t like the fact that Trump lost.

How is it possible that one state can dictate how another state conducts elections? Whatever happened to state’s rights? Plus, there is an additional element to this half-baked effort that that reminds me of the Jim Crow era of voter suppression. This lawsuit is directly trying to cancel votes from the heavily African American cities of Atlanta, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Milwaukee. If that’s not race-based suppression, I don’t know what is.

It is unimaginable that the Supreme Court will take this last-ditch attempt to save Trump’s failed presidency seriously.

Slatery’s excuse for joining the case is to somehow uphold the principle of separation of powers. But really, it’s all about helping Trump hold on to power. This is not just shameful and racist - it’s un-American. And that’s my point of view.
