Opinion | We cannot ignore the fallout from Trump’s brazen attempts to stay in office | Otis Sanford

Local 24 News political analyst and commentator Otis Sanford shares his point of view on claims of election fraud and the effects on the COVID-19 pandemic.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — We can joke all day about Rudy Giuliani’s dripping hair color to go with his outlandish claims of massive voter fraud. But the effort by President Trump and his band of Q-Anon conspirators to overturn the election is doing immeasurable damage to American democracy.

I have long since lost interest in the antics of this lame duck president. But I cannot ignore the terrible fallout from his brazen and illegal attempts to declare himself the winner.

As Trump vindictively refuses to allow a smooth transition to the incoming Joe Biden and Kamala Harris administration, the coronavirus pandemic continues to surge virtually out of control. Cases continue to climb Shelby County and across Tennessee and local health officials are set to impose new business restrictions as early as Monday.

Everyone one us knows – or knows of – someone who has died from COVID-19. Plus, close members of my family caught the virus, but thankfully have since recovered.

Without question, denying the President-Elect access to vital COVID information as Trump stews inside the White House means any more people will die.

But beyond that, Tennessee Republicans – who are joining national party leaders in supporting Trump’s racist efforts to disenfranchise black and brown voters – have lost any and all claims of credibility. Their failure to stand for equal access to the ballot box marks a sad moment for America, which is certainly no joke. And that’s my point of view.
