“Political foolishness” must be removed from process of reopening the country during coronavirus outbreak

Thoughtful, deliberate plan is needed, not political grandstanding, says Local 24 political analyst and commentator Otis Sanford

MEMPHIS, Tennessee —

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to claim lives and wreck our economy, the last thing we need is political grandstanding. But that’s just what we are getting every day from the White House – as the rest of us struggle to make ends meet – or just to keep from falling prey to this cruel virus.

It is encouraging that governors in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas have stepped up their efforts to deal with the spread of COVID-19 – after initially making political decisions – rather being effective leaders.

All three governors have now called on public schools in their states to remain closed for the rest of this school year. And most districts have followed suit. Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson also is using Medicaid funds to pay bonuses to healthcare workers in nursing homes. And Tennessee’s Bill Lee wants a thoughtful, deliberate plan in place – before trying to reopen the state’s economy.

And what are we getting from the President? Nothing but bluster and propaganda. Putting Donald Trump’s name on stimulus checks going to millions of Americans – is the worst political stunt so far.

But we can’t get bogged down debating political tricks. We must stay focused, first on saving lives, and second, on helping those who need financial help. We must also get better at testing. And then gradually and methodical get the economy moving again. That takes leadership and teamwork. All without political foolishness. And that’s my point of view. I’m Otis Sanford, for Local 24 News.
