Opinion | Why are Shelby County suburbs so anxious to intervene in MLGW/TVA decision? | Richard Ransom

Richard Ransom explains why he thinks Shelby County suburbs are so anxious to intervene in the MLGW/TVA decision.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some of the six suburbs' sour attitudes are understandable.

After all, they represent 35% of all MLGW customers, but they don't have a single vote on the MLGW board. That should be changed.

But the answer is not to approve these non-binding resolutions opposing even exploring whether MLGW should leave the TVA. There are more than 20 private companies, companies MLGW is keeping secret, which say they can provide our power better and cheaper.

I dare say the people who live in all six suburbs might like to explore that. Yet, even though not a single mayor or alderman has any idea what's in those proposals right now because almost no one does.

Somehow, they know the best decision is to keep things status quo.

We hear the TVA has been quietly lobbying the suburbs to get these resolutions passed. That's the only thing that would explain why they'd take action on behalf of their citizens, without anywhere close to all the information.
