With COVID cases down while vaccinations and morale are up, we’re hopeful to getting back to normal soon | Opinion

As the COVID pandemic continues, a new poll sheds light on how Americans are slowly getting back to normal activities.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — In Wednesday’s Ransom Note: Getting back to normal. With each passing day, we're avoiding any sign of a spike in cases as thousands of more people every day get vaccinated.

We're re-emerging as shown in a fascinating poll by Axios/Ipsos. It compared how our behaviors are changing in just the past month. In mid February, only a third of us had gone out to eat in the past week. Now it's at 45%. Last month, 39% had visited with friends or relatives in the past week. Now nearly half of us have, while the number of people saying they had stayed home to avoid others fell from 74% to 67% during that time.

When asked if their emotional well-being had improved, that number climbed from 11% to 17%. The poll also found the unvaccinated are more likely to be out and about now than those who have their vaccines. Go figure. I volunteered at a vaccine site recently and got my shot. It was a great feeling. Everyone was in a great mood. Starting Friday, everyone can sign up, and I hope you will. Let's get this behind us.
