Despite a second-half surge, Christian Brothers High School lost to McCallie School 3-2 on Monday night in the Tennessee Division II-AA boys soccer final in Murfreesboro.
The Blue Tornado was relentless in the opening 13 minutes. Brandon Mathurin struck first 11 minutes in, followed by Kenneth Chime a minute later, and Arnold Elliot in the 14th minute.
The Purple Wave steadied and threatened to score after McCallie's third goal. Defender Cullen Brummer eventually cut the Blue Tornado's lead to two with a stunning effort from 35 yards.
CBHS managed just two more shots to end the half, while McCallie ended the first 45 minutes with 11 total shots.
The second half was a different story as the Purple Wave peppered the Blue Tornado's goal for 45 minutes. Just over 60 minutes into the match, Hayden Mulrooney, son of University of Memphis head men's soccer coach and MLS legend Richard Mulrooney, scored to cut the lead to one.
The Blue Tornado's goalkeeper, Ryan Larrabee, made two crucial saves to secure McCallie's 3-2 win over CBHS.
