Let the games begin | Local athletes to watch for at the 2024 Summer Olympics

The cauldron has been lit in Paris and now it's time for the games to begin. Here are the local stars to be on the lookout for at the games.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The cauldron has been lit in Paris, and now it's time for the 2024 Summer Olympics to officially begin. Here are the local stars to be on the lookout for at the games. 

Santi Aldama - Memphis Grizzlies forward, Santi Aldama will compete for Spain in the Men's Basketball. Spain is playing in Group A along with Australia, Greece and Canada. Their first game in the group stages is against Australia at 4 a.m. CT on July, 27. 

Seth Rider - Germantown native, Seth Rider will compete in the Triathlon for team USA. The Men's final is at 1 a.m. CT on July, 30 while the mixed triathlon final is on Aug. 5 at 1 a.m. CT. 

Harrison Williams - MUS grad, Harrison Williams will compete in the decathlon for Team USA. Williams will compete in the Men's Decathlon on Aug. 3 and 4 starting at 3 a.m. CT. 

Shelby McEwen - Abbeville native and former NWCC basketball player, Shelby McEwen will compete in his second straight Olympics in the high jump for Team USA. Qualification for high jump is on Aug. 7, starting at 3 a.m. CT while the finals will be held on Aug. 10, starting at 12 p.m. CT. McEwen made the final and placed twelfth in Tokyo. 

Sam Kendricks - Oxford native and Ole Miss grad, Sam Kendricks will compete in his third straight Olympics in the pole vault for Team USA. Qualification for the pole vault is at 3 a.m. CT on Aug. 3 and the final will be at 12 p.m. CT on Aug. 5. Kendricks placed third in Rio and wasn't able to compete in Tokyo due to a positive Covid-19 test. 

McKenzie Long - Ole Miss grad, McKenzie Long will compete in her first Olympics in the 200m dash for Team USA. Prelims begin on Aug. 4 at 3:55 a.m. CT, semifinals continue on the 5th and the final will be held on the 6th at 2:40 p.m. CT. 

Raven Saunders - Ole Miss grad, Raven Saunders will compete in the shot put for Team USA. The qualifying round begins on Aug. 8 at 3:25 a.m. CT and the final takes place on Aug. 9 at 12:40 p.m. CT.
