Luken Baker bakes up a new homerun record

Luken Baker's 75 homeruns is the most all-time in Memphis Redbirds history.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — Luken Baker now sits alone in Memphis Redbirds history. The Redbirds first baseman hit two homeruns Wednesday night to break the Redbirds all-time record for homeruns in a career.

Baker blasted his first homerun in the sixth inning against the Gwinnett Stripers. The ball left the right outfield for two runs and closing the gap, 3-2. Up 5-3 in the ninth, he added another solo homer to give Memphis a 6-3 lead and ultimately the 6-4 win.

The 6'4", 285 pound former TCU Horned Frog, is in his third full season playing Triple-A ball for the Redbirds. He's hit 21 homeruns this season while batting .239/.350/.561 and adding 53 RBI.

"Triple A home run records aren't really the things that you strive for in professional baseball," Baker told ABC24 last week. "It's never really on the front of my mind. I don't step up to the plate thinking alright, I have to I have to get to this record, but it is a pretty neat. It will be a cool thing to accomplish."

Baker had a call up to the St. Louis Cardinals last season, he played 33 games and hit two homeruns and 10 RBI.

The Memphis Redbirds are 39-38 this year and fourth in the International League West standings. They have split two games of a six game series with the Stripers. Thursday's game is set for first pitch in Atlanta at 6:05 p.m.
