Madison Griggs: Memphis-made, Greece-bound

The record-setting guard will join G.A.S. Evnikos in Athens as she pursues dreams on and off the court.

Maddison Griggs grew up with a love and joy for basketball. She bloomed into one of the best high school basketball players in the city and was a four-star recruit at Houston High School. In her junior season, she had a difficult decision to make. The former had multiple offers, but Memphis promised her playing time off the bat.

"Once I figured that out, it gave me the answer to Memphis really," Griggs said.

Griggs made a program record 96 threes in her freshman season at Memphis. And the rest is history.

"I always think of myself that I can do more. I love and appreciate that I did that, but I always think about what can I do next," Griggs said.

The former Mustang would go on to have one of the best individual careers in Memphis basketball history. For the next four seasons, she continued to improve, and in her fifth year, she led the Tigers in scoring and broke the university record for most three-pointers made (287) by a Tiger.

Throughout her time at Memphis, she pursued other passions. Griggs developed a clothing line, 96th and Madison, as an ode to her record-breaking freshman year.

"It makes me feel great to create something that is an outlet that makes them feel that they can be themselves and do what they love and create what they want to create because they can," Griggs said.

Griggs says she plays with that same mentality on the court and has turned her passion for basketball into achieving her dream.

"I just signed my contract the other day, so I will be playing for team Evnikos," Griggs said.

The former Memphis high school standout is headed to Athens, Greece, to play in the first division for G.A.S. Evnikos.

"I’m very excited. I am beyond excited. It is going to be a dream, it’s one of my dreams come true, to do this," Griggs said.

Griggs will head to Athens in August to begin the next chapter in her life.
