Sheffield football wants redemption in 2024

After consecutive seasons winning their region, but falling in the playoffs first round, Sheffield looks to get over the hump.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — Lately, it's been one and done in the 3A playoffs for Sheffield High School. But with some new additions and a stud receiver to build on as a foundation, they are confident this is the group that can get them over the playoff hump.

2024's season will be a redemption tour of sorts. In consecutive seasons, they've dominated Region 8-3A and earned the number one seed.

But in consecutive seasons, they fell short in the first round of the playoffs, losing both times to Ripley High School.

"First seed in our district and we losing in the first round. It just leaves a bad taste in our mouth," said senior defensive lineman, Issiah Lackey.

"It was painful. It was painful to see these young guys, tears coming down their faces. They don't want to see that again. In order for that not to happen, we've got to grind," said head coach Edward Kuykendoll.

The Knights have plenty to work with, starting with reigning 3A Mr. Football winner and University of Tennessee commit Radarius Jackson. The primary receiver, who also excels at safety, is excited to focus more on the offensive side of the ball. He caught 30 receptions for 696 yards and 13 touchdowns at receiver, but also ran for 786 yards and nine scores while throwing for three touchdowns.

With Craigmont transfer quarterback Elijah Brinson in the fold, Jackson can focus on dominating the outside.

"Soon as they told me we were getting a quarterback, I hit him up fast. Building that bond. The past two years, we didn't really have a real quarterback so I can't wait to see what it looks like with a real quarterback in the backfield," Jackson said. "It's great to know I don't have to be everywhere on the field now."

Defensively, it all falls to Lackey, a three-time All-State defensive lineman.

Lackey is the undisputed leader of the defense. He had seven sacks last season. He understands that his group wants to return to the playoffs, but they cannot do it all at once.

"We take it one step at a time. We can't automatically jump into the playoffs. Because we got to get through week one, then week two to get to the playoffs," Lackey said.

It's almost poetic how this season shapes up. The 2025 senior class will be the first four-year class for Coach Kuykendoll, who came to Sheffield in 2019. He hopes it's the one that takes Sheffield to new heights.

"They came in with me, they understand the standards, and they're ready to reap everything that they've sown."

Sheffield opens the season Aug. 23 at home against Manassas.
